Dear friends,
This Sunday we are discussing: The meaning of "isims".
The many changes in modern political and social life today make it
fertile grounds for the ideologies of the future to come to life and
flourish. Indeed we are living in a time that requires a new mind set
for survival; evolution always raises the ratchet. The challenge for
ideologies is to achieve the status of an "ism".
The twentieth century saw its fair share of these isms from communism,
socialism, neo liberalism, Nazism and so on. Unfortunately, these
ideologies gave the neutral English suffix "ism" a bad name. But we
shouldn't condemn a label, and a linguistic one at that, for those who
abuse their ideology. It's like blaming the words "Nixon" or "Bush" for
the ills of American society!
We know that language is a very good tool to influence politics and
social culture, especially people whose job isn't to catch charlatans
and dupes. But should language be immune, or at least, is it immune from
being affected by the company we force it to be with?
