from Lawrence, SUNDAY PhiloMadrid meeting at 6:30pm: The Value of Silence
Dear friends,
I hope you are all ready for a relaxed and good holiday.
This Sunday we are discussing: The values of Silence.
For my essay I will leave you with one of the most important lessons
I've learnt when I was young: What you don't say you won't be sorry
you've said it!
And with that shortest essay ever I look forward to seeing on Sunday

from Lawrence, SUNDAY PhiloMadrid meeting at 6:30pm: Talking too much
Dear friends,
This Sunday we are discussing: Talking too much.
There are various other expressions that also describe this trait:
verbal diarrhoea or compulsive talking. No doubt this is a character
trait of some people, but how much is too much? And what causes such
traits? But we also use this expression, talking too much, to describe
someone who divulges sensitive information when talking to people. Maybe
someone who gets carried away and inadvertently reveals information that
is best kept private. But for us the challenge is to find the
philosophical implications.
Just a quick note to let you know that we won't be stopping this session
since the Centro Segoviano will stay open throughout the holiday period.
However, I will send out the email next week on Wednesday.

from Lawrence, SUNDAY PhiloMadrid meeting at 6:30pm: Alien Life + News
Dear friends,
This Sunday we are discussing: alien life.
By this topic we do not only mean the crazy life we lead in a modern
city otherwise known as the rat race. However, we really do mean life
outside our planet. This is a more interesting candidate for our
discussion since there are issues about biology, language, established
beliefs such as religions and of course the mysteries of the universe
itself.
A more serious approach to the topic would be the modern science
astrobiology. I believe this is the science that will lead us to
discover alien life itself; and by life we mean carbon based life first
and foremost. To start with, you cannot do better than to listen to
these two podcasts from Scientific American. These programmes are about
a new initiative to search for alien life although they speak of alien
civilisation and intelligent life it's all about alien life.

from Lawrence, SUNDAY PhiloMadrid meeting at 6:30pm: To be or to have
Dear friends,
This Sunday we are discussing; To be or to have.
With this dictum we usually understand either to be a person as an
individual or to be a materialistic person. However, this issue rests on
the assumption of what an individual especially a free individual. But
what if the people who are the top dogs in a materialistic society also
have some say about what and who is an individual? In some societies the
good individual is sometimes defined as the materialist who gives away
his or her wealth to charity; at least the big bulk of it. In other
words in the 21st century it is possible to have and to be!
